Hello everyone!

A few birding friends of mine started this friendly "competition" to see how many bird species we'll see this year. I figured since this is a bird group I'd start one up for the whole group. :D Birders of all ages and experience can join up! Take a look here! It is a Google spreadsheet that anyone can edit. Since birding is based on an honor system I would assume participants will be truthful and not adding in pterodactyls or other funny sightings. Currently, there is a list of North American bird species and international vagrants. Since this is open to everyone throughout the world, if there is a bird species that is not included please add it! If there is a bird species that is named differently in your area, add on to the name instead of making a new row. For example: European Starling (Common Starling) I'm going along the eBird route in not including hybrids, variants, and morphs to the final count to prevent confusion.

This is mostly for fun and maybe to encourage folks to go outside and look for birds. Maybe a few local deviants can meet up and bird. I hope you join! :D

A reminder: the Birds in Winter contest is still going and will close February 1st! Visit the contest journal for more information and take a look at the current entries!

If you have any questions please comment in this journal or send the group a note.

Thanks for reading!

I've personally started doing a birding list just for fun last year, trying to beat my personal best year. If I have anything to add that isn't already added I'll list it. I have 37 this year so far.

Yes! :D If there are birds that are not on the list add them at the bottom. There might be some a few species found in your country already there. Mostly because they accidentally end up in the US or have a huge range.
